San Diego County Credit Union, with three East County branches in La Mesa, Santee and El Cajon, is preparing to set a new Guinness World Record at its upcoming SDCCU Super Shred Event on Saturday, July 26. From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., at Qualcomm Stadium’s northwest parking lot, the public is invited to bring an unlimited amount of paper documents to be shred for free. SDCCU is planning to beat its own world record set last year for the most paper collected in 24 hours. In July 2013, SDCCU organized the effort to collect and shred 168,147 pounds of paper, setting a new Guinness World Record for the most paper collected in 24 hours. During the event, 40 trucks were used to collect the paper.
At the SDCCU Super Shred Event on Saturday, July 26, paper documents containing personal and confidential information should be removed from binders prior to shredding; however, staples and paperclips are okay to be shredded. The first 1,000 guests who take advantage of the SDCCU Super Shred Event will receive a free gift. Also, monetary donations will be accepted for the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA. SDCCU began hosting its free Shred Day events in 2007 and has since collected, shredded and recycled more than 720,000 pounds of documents at no charge, saving over 6,000 trees (every 120 pounds shredded represents one saved tree).

In addition, LinkServe E-Waste will be onsite to collect and recycle electronic waste (eWaste). Accepted eWaste items can include TVs, PC systems, laptops, printers, toner cartridges, hard drives, monitors, keyboards, PDAs, networking equipment, landline and cellular phones, power supplies, copiers, scanners, fax machines, stereos, home entertainment systems and VCR, VCD and DVD players.

With a greater prevalence of fraud and identity theft in recent years, it’s important to provide San Diegans with an easy opportunity to dispose of sensitive data,” said Halleck. “The first rule in preventing identity theft is: if you don’t need it, shred it, and we are here to make that happen. It’s not only a great way to minimize the amount of confidential information you have at home but it also reduces waste.”
