How the garden was started
This garden was started in 2009 by Lillian Kiefer as a way to help families thrown into a difficult financial situation and greater need during the recession and housing crises. Friends and neighbors joined in and helped the garden grow into the beautiful, productive space it is today.
Mental well-being grows in the garden

Lillian’s community was also hit hard by the mental and emotional strain caused by the recession. For many people, the act of gardening is therapeutic. It can provide a much-needed sense of calm in a hectic world.
Studies have shown that gardening can help to reduce anxiety and depression, and it can also improve overall mental well-being. There are a number of reasons why gardening may have such positive effects on mental health.
It gives people a sense of control over their environment. Gardeners can choose what plants to grow, where to place them, and how to care for them. This can be empowering for those who feel like they have little control over their lives.
Gardening requires focus and concentration. This can provide a welcome respite from anxious thoughts and help to clear the mind.
Gardening is a physical activity that helps to release endorphins, which have mood-boosting effects.
Whether you enjoy working with your hands, being outdoors, or simply seeing your plants grow, there are many ways that gardening can improve your mental health.
The fresh vegetables grown here help local families
Every year, enough food is grown in the garden to donate 3,000 to 4,000 pounds of produce to local families in need.
